If you are having a dog as a pet in your family, then the knowledge about dog’s food is necessary. It is must that you know what type of food a dog should be given. Some people make food for their dogs themselves. On the other hand, some purchase a readymade food for their dogs from market.

Basically there are two types of Dogs Food

1. Home Made Dog Foods

2. Commercially Made Dog Foods

Home made dog foods: - There are different types of views on the best diet for dogs. Some experts recommend natural diet for dogs which consists of raw meat, vegetables, eggs and fruits etc. Many dogs take fruits and vegetables with great charm, so for them it is best to give cooked vegetables which are nutritionally balanced. In fruits you can give grapes etc. Dog’s food can be of three types according to the water level in food:

  • Dry
  • Semi moist
  • Moist

Dry food can be made by pressurized steam, on which vitamins, grease etc are sprayed.

Commercially made dog foods: - Dog’s Food that is packed and available off the shelf is generally heavy on material that is useless or less desirable for dogs. These may include:

  • Meat by products
  • Meat & Bone meals
  • Grain
  • Restaurant grease

Some common brands that provide dog’s readymade food are Alpo, Dogs Chow made by Ralston Purina company, Artimis, Clifornia Natural, Innova, Canodae etc.

Raw feeding: - One raw food is “Bones and Raw food” that contains various supplements which doesn’t include meat and is prepared with great care. Another raw food is “Whole Pray” which includes meat, head, fur, muscles, skin, bone etc.

In conclusion, a dog should be fed by vegetables and raw food which have more amount of protein because a dog takes 10% of his calorie form protein. Also an adult dog should be fed only once or twice in a day and puppy should be given meals two or three times per day.

 
How to choose a dog food

Amount of food given to the Dog:

The amount of food given to the dog depends on the activity of the dog and how much is the age of the dog. It also depends on the size of the dog. Like humans, dogs also passed in different stages of life, in which they need different types of nutrition according to the stage of the dog. If it is a puppy then it needs more nutrition to build their muscles. But besides it you also have to control the amount of food to be consumed by large breed dogs, when they are in early stage, else they will get overweight, which is not good for them. So a proper nutritional diet should be provided to the dog according to their stage.

How many times per day a dog should be feed:

As a rule, puppy needs more nutrition so feeding should be four times per day till three months. After the age of three month, a dog should feed three times per day till six months. After that a dog owner should provide food to dog twice per day and up to a year once a day is enough. Some dog’s owners make a schedule to feed their dog while some leave it on the dog’s mood.

How to choose a nutritional food:

There are so many brands and types of food available in the market, so it is very difficult to choose a right food for your dog according to his need. The list given will help you more to choose a right food for your dog:

  • Super premium products available at specialty stores generally are very expensive and have more energy. If the dogs are overfeeding with these types of products, they will get overweight very soon so these products should be given in less amount to the dogs.
  • Premium products have moderate price and lower calories than the super premium products. These products are available on grocery stores.
  • Dry food has more nutrition in comparison of wet food.
  • Canned food or wet food has less nutrition because it has more water than calories so the large breed dog will get his required nutrition by feeling full.
  • Breed size food contains nutrition according to the needs of specific breed size and life stage.
  • Puppy food has more protein, carbohydrates, calcium and other nutrition required to develop the bones and muscles of the puppy when it is in growing stage.
  • Adult food has proper nutrition to fulfill the adult dog requirements. But it doesn’t have proper diet for pregnant dogs.
  • Senior food is generally appropriate for the dogs that are over the age of 7, because their needs are different from the adult dogs. They generally need more protein to maintain their muscles and health.
  • Weight management food is generally had more protein and fiber to maintain the weight of the dig.
  • Performance food is especially suitable for the dogs that are more active and hardworking.
  • Home made food have a risk to have more calories according to the needs of the dogs.
